Barriers in Life: Trauma Makes Them Harder!

In the picture, Cinder Cockerspaniel steps over barriers to exercise her left elbow in physical therapy (much improved arthritis). As a trauma expert, I believe that barriers in life are harder to overcome when we’re coping with trauma symptoms! These barriers can include conflicts in relationships, hard problems in our work or studies, even peacefully reading a book. We may feel tired from the anxiety. Our thoughts could be racing- which worry is ahead in the race? Discouragement or depression creeps alongside trauma. And please, let’s keep up our self-esteem/confidence if we are criticizing ourselves or being condemned by others. And the trauma symptom of hypervigilance (jumpy, easily startled, looking around anxiously) sure doesn’t help to concentrate and overcome barriers!

Trauma is nothing to be ashamed of! It is great to ask for help. Therapy can really identify the causes and treatment. How wonderful it would be to feel much better! It’s a gift to ourselves and our partners as well- they may need information to understand us and behave in a loving way. When we are traumatized, we may push people away. And we sure don’t need to harm ourselves in frustration. We are often doing our very best.
