Being Prepared For Trauma

Choking is frightening! Trying to be prepared for this traumatic experience, in yourself or others, could include buying a choking rescue device and keep it in a well known place. A mask is put over the mouth and suction is used to bring up that which is stuck. Reading directions and helping family and friends learn how to use it- this would be helpful and hopeful!

Trauma is like that- splinters stuck in our minds, repeating sounds and pictures of the traumatic event over and over. In psychotherapy, a trauma-informed therapist helps deal with those stuck memories in one of a number of ways! Some people attending the Washington journalist dinner described experiencing trauma symptoms while hearing sounds of violence and seeking safety under tables; one person reported freezing where she was unable to move her body, frozen with trauma.
