Trauma’s Stolen Moments

Ouch My Trauma Hurts (OMTH)

I flew out west on a trip to evaluate possible trauma in a man who had bottled up his depression all of his life. The result- he broke the law in ways he could never have imagined. He had stomach aches and head aches. That’s what trauma can do, leave our bodies hurting. As an anxiety disorder, the traumatized among us are sometimes flooded with anxiety that leads to fear and super alertness (high startle response). Then, if someone threatens us with words or actions, we can lose awareness for moments that are stolen by trauma, not even remember exactly what happened.

What I explore is mitigation. In some cases, threats and violence in childhood and adult life help explain someone’s behavior. They did what they did, but it could also be more understandable.

It is really kind to ourselves to share our feelings with trusted others, so we don’t bottle up pain. If counseling would help, I wish that for you. I hope we all can have peace and clarity enough to be able to choose our actions with care.
